Find Vermillion County Cases

Need a Vermillion County case lookup? Start with Indiana's public court system, which lets you run a Vermillion County case search by name, case number, citation number, or attorney. What you get back is the public case summary: parties, filing status, settings, and any documents the system can show for a state trial matter. One filter deserves care. Cases in the county court of record sit in Vermillion Circuit Court, while many traffic matters route through Clinton City Court instead. Results are useful leads, not the last word. The clerk keeps the official court record, and restricted matters plus some older files may never appear online.

How to Search Cases by Name

Indiana MyCase is the statewide public layer for Odyssey records from Vermillion Circuit Court and Clinton City Court. A public search needs no party account. Start with the MyCase Name tab, enter the last name or business name, and add only enough detail to separate likely matches. Common names should be paired with a court, filing range, or case status. The portal can return no more than 1,000 results, so a narrow Vermillion County search is more useful than a broad statewide query.

  1. Open MyCase and choose the Name tab.
  2. Enter a last name or business name, then add a first or middle name if useful.
  3. Select Vermillion Circuit Court or Clinton City Court and narrow the filing dates or status.
  4. Open the matching case and read its Chronological Case Summary in date order.

Vermillion Case Search Tabs

MyCase separates Case, Name, and Attorney searches. Use Case when an exact case, citation, or cross-reference number is known. Use Name when the identifier is missing. Attorney search accepts a lawyer's name or bar number and can help trace public filings in a known matter. The court list loads dynamically, so wait for the local options before submitting the query.

The official search tips explain wildcards, omitted hyphens, and filters. They also explain why a citation number can be the fastest path to a traffic result. Captcha and anti-data-mining controls protect the service. They do not change the normal public search route.

The official trial-statistics pages show how court data is counted, but statistical totals are not individual case results. The image below comes from the trial and probation statistics source.

That distinction keeps a Vermillion County case lookup focused on an actual CCS instead of aggregate court activity.

How to Search by Case Number

A current Vermillion Circuit identifier commonly follows 83C01-YYYYMM-TYPE-######. The county number is 83, `C01` identifies the Circuit Court, the year and month mark filing, the type identifies the case category, and the final digits are the sequence. Clinton City Court uses `83H01`. MyCase generally accepts the number without hyphens or leading zeroes. Search both formats if a copied identifier is unclear, and compare the court and filed date before relying on a result.

Older converted files may use a different pattern or may never have reached the public Odyssey layer. In that case, call the Vermillion Circuit Clerk at 765-492-5350 or make a specific request by mail to PO Box 10, Newport, IN 47966-0010. Ask about an archived, paper, or converted file rather than assuming that no online hit means no case exists.

Vermillion Court Codes Matter

The code at the front of a case number is a routing tool. `83C01` points to Vermillion Circuit Court, the county's only court of record. `83H01` points to Clinton City Court. That second code is vital for citation searches because the county clerk directs traffic tickets to the city court. A result under a city-court code is not a search error.

CCS means Chronological Case Summary, Indiana's ordered list of case events.

Entry date may differ from the date an event occurred or a document was filed.

RJO is the Record of Judgments and Orders, a separate index layer.

Indiana publishes help on trial data and terminology. The following image is tied to the trial-statistics help page.

Use those definitions to read counts and case events without treating them as the same thing.

What a Case Search Shows

A public Vermillion County result can show the case header, court, caption, parties and roles, case type, filed date, status, charges or claims, settings, CCS entries, disposition, judgment, and some document links. The CCS is an event log, not a folder containing every filed page. A docket line can mention an order even when the public user cannot open the order itself. Party and attorney access can differ from anonymous public access.

Case numberCourt, filing period, type, and sequence identifier.
Caption and partiesPublic names and their roles in the case.
Case typeThe category code, such as civil, criminal, infraction, or ordinance.
Filed dateThe date the case entered the court system.
StatusOpen, closed, pending, or disposed status as recorded.
CCS eventsDated filings, settings, rulings, and disposition entries.

Vermillion Public and Party Access

Anonymous MyCase access covers public, non-confidential case information. A party may register and use an access code to view added documents when the court permits it. That does not make sealed or excluded material public. Attorneys have another access level tied to their role.

A public hit is not a certified search. MyCase states that it is not the official court record and that balances may be incomplete. The Vermillion Circuit Clerk holds the official file and supplies certified copies. A plain online view is useful for finding the right matter; certification is the clerk's attestation that a copy matches the record.

Expungement law can affect visibility. The image below is sourced from the Indiana expungement statute.

A granted expungement may remove a matter from ordinary public results depending on its type, while pending or denied requests may remain visible.

County vs Statewide Case Search

Vermillion County does not publish a separate county-hosted case database. MyCase is both the statewide starting point and the online local lookup layer. The distinction is therefore between an online public search and the official county file, not between two competing portals. Filter MyCase to the right local court, then contact the clerk or court for confirmation, older material, certification, or a document that is not online.

When Vermillion Search Fails

No result can mean the court filter is wrong, the filing range is too tight, the spelling differs, the record predates online conversion, or access is restricted. Remove optional filters one at a time. Try sounds-like or a wildcard, then switch between `83C01` and `83H01` when the routing is uncertain. A traffic ticket should be checked with Clinton City Court at 765-832-9444.

If a known Circuit Court matter stays absent, contact the Circuit Clerk by phone, at the counter at 255 South Main Street in Newport, or by mail. A written request should state the court, case number if known, document, date range, and plain or certified preference. The county public-records form is another specific written route, but a court-file request belongs with the clerk that maintains the file.

The governing public-record framework is Indiana's Access to Public Records Act. The accompanying image comes from the official APRA statute page.

Indiana Access to Public Records Act page

APRA works with the Indiana Supreme Court's more specific Rules on Access to Court Records.

Restricted Cases and Access Rules

Indiana starts with public access, subject to exclusions. Juvenile matters, sealed documents, confidential identifiers, granted expungements, adoption and mental-health records, parts of domestic-relations files, and protected-person information may be absent or limited. Protection-order cases do not appear in ordinary MyCase search, though a separate state search may show limited public information.

Ask the clerk whether a missing item is confidential, sealed, not scanned, older, or available only by court order. Do not try to work around a restriction. The Rules on Access to Court Records control, and 2026 amendments make the current rule text important. For the document behind a CCS entry, use the Vermillion County court record search routes and request only what the rules permit.

Vermillion Citation Number Shortcut

A citation number can avoid broad name results when the matter is a traffic infraction or ordinance case. Enter it on MyCase's Case tab, then confirm the `83H01` Clinton City Court code, filing date, and citation details. If it does not appear, keep the printed ticket and call Clinton City Court at 765-832-9444. Indiana ePay may show a participating unpaid account, but its payment result is not the full CCS or a certified court record.

Quick check: The court code and citation number should agree with the ticket before any date or payment information is used.
